Students at Virtual Preparatory Academy of Oregon work toward a daily "Strive for 5" goal, aiming for five hours of focused, individualized learning built around live instruction. That built-in benchmark gives families something concrete to support at home, rather than an open-ended sense of how much work a student should be doing each day. The school also hosts a minimum of six in-person gatherings throughout the year, giving Owls regular chances to connect face to face. These virtual learning tips for parents focus on how to reinforce this structure and community throughout the school year.
Because the "Strive for 5" goal applies to every Owl, regardless of grade level, families often find it useful to talk with their student about what a productive five hours actually looks like for them specifically, rather than assuming one approach works for everyone.
Tip #1: Create a Dedicated Learning Space
Reaching five focused hours in a day is a lot easier when a student is not also hunting for a charger or negotiating over a shared table. It does not need to be large, just quiet and used the same way each day.
Keep the school-provided Chromebook, a charger, headphones, and any needed materials within reach. Fewer interruptions during a live session make it easier for a student to stay on pace toward their daily hours.
Because live E-gaming plays a role in school spirit, some families set up gaming sessions in a slightly different spot than the primary learning space, which helps keep the daily five-hour focus goal protected from that otherwise valuable activity.
A full setup checklist is available on the school's parent and student resource page, which outlines what students need for a successful learning environment at home.
Tip #2: Establish a Consistent Routine
The daily "Strive for 5" goal gives Owls a number to aim for, and families often find that building a routine around that number, rather than treating it as an abstract expectation, makes it far more attainable.
A steady wake-up time and a clear start to the school day help a student begin working toward their "Strive for 5" goal without a slow start eating into the day.
The daily "Strive for 5" goal applies across the school, so families with more than one student enrolled often find it helpful to compare notes on pacing strategies that have worked for each child, even when their course loads differ.
Tip #3: Encourage Organization and Time Management
A specific daily hour goal gives students something concrete to pace themselves against throughout the day rather than rushing at the end. Checking the Canvas dashboard each morning is a good starting point.
Using Calendars and Planners
A shared calendar that notes live session times, in-person gathering dates, and assignment deadlines helps a student see their month at a glance, not just their day.
Setting Daily Goals
Breaking the "Strive for 5" goal into smaller blocks, such as completing one subject before a live session and another afterward, makes the daily target feel more manageable.
For families tracking progress toward the 24 credits required for graduation, checking in about that progress around each in-person gathering can turn an already scheduled event into a natural moment for a bigger-picture conversation.
Tip #4: Stay Connected With Teachers
Weekly check-ins between students, teachers, and peers give parents a natural opening to ask questions rather than waiting until a bigger issue develops.
A short message about how a student is progressing toward their daily focus goal, or a question about an upcoming in-person gathering, helps keep communication open throughout the year.
Since reaching five hours of focused learning is a shared daily benchmark, teachers are often well positioned to help troubleshoot if a student is consistently falling short of that goal, so raising the topic directly tends to be productive.
Tip #5: Minimize Distractions
Reaching five hours of focused learning each day requires some attention to distractions. Turning off notifications during live sessions and keeping the learning space separate from entertainment both help protect that focus time.
Live E-gaming, while a valued part of school spirit, works best when kept clearly separate from instructional time so it does not compete with a student's daily learning goal.
Live E-gaming is a valued but separate activity from instructional time, so some families find it helpful to physically move to a different space for gaming sessions, keeping the primary learning space reserved for the daily focus goal.
Tip #6: Support Healthy Habits and Breaks
Working toward five hours of focused learning each day benefits from real breaks along the way. A short walk or a few minutes of movement between sessions can help a student sustain focus for the full day.
Consistent sleep and mealtimes support a student's ability to reach their daily goal without running out of energy partway through.
In-person gatherings offer a built-in opportunity for a longer break from the regular routine, and many families treat gathering days as a chance to reset before returning to the daily five-hour focus goal.
Because Owls are working toward a specific daily focus goal, some families find it useful to track progress toward that goal on a simple weekly chart, which can make an otherwise abstract target feel more concrete and give students a visual sense of how consistently they are meeting it.
Tip #7: Encourage Independence
Tracking their own progress toward the "Strive for 5" goal and managing their own Canvas dashboard gives students real ownership as their routine becomes more familiar.
Building this independence gradually, starting with smaller responsibilities, helps students take ownership of their own pace and progress over time.
Encourage students growing comfortable pacing their own "Strive for 5" goal to notice which parts of the day they focus best in, which helps them take ownership of their own most productive routine.
Additional Strategies for Virtual Learning Success
In-person gatherings, held at least six times throughout the year, give Owls a chance to build friendships face to face, while live E-gaming offers a distinctive way to build school spirit and connect with classmates virtually. Together, these opportunities help balance the independent nature of daily coursework with a strong sense of community. Encouraging participation in both is a meaningful way parents can support students in online schooling.
Families who are new to the school often find that attending the first in-person gathering of the year helps a student feel more connected to classmates before diving fully into the daily focus goal.
Because the "Strive for 5" goal and in-person gatherings both play a central role in the VPrep Oregon experience, families who lean into both the daily structure and the community events tend to see the strongest results over a full school year.
Families who want a closer look at coursework and grade-level expectations can review the academic program overview, which outlines what students need to work toward the 24 credits required for graduation.
Families considering enrollment can find the full process, including required documents, on the admissions and enrollment page.
